Bhure Lal Committee formed under Supreme Court directive to suggest ways to curb pollution in Delhi.

JULY 1998
Court sets out a "roadmap" to lower pollution in Delhi. Commercial vehicles to run on CNG or clean fuel by April 2001.

FEBRUARY 2001
Government slow in implementing court ruling. Confusion about CNG being the only clean fuel.

MARCH 2001
Delhi in chaos. CNG becomes the de facto clean fuel. Court extends deadline to September 30, 2001.

APRIL 2001
Bhure Lal Committee asked to take a second look into the definition of clean fuel.

Committee recommends CNG, LPG, propane and ULSD as environmentally acceptable fuels.
