METROSCAPE: LOOKING GLASS
CHENNAI
Restaurant
Kolkata's
famous Chinese restaurant Red Hot Chilli Pepper has come to Chennai in
a spiffy avtaar called Beijing Blues, offering what they call an
authentic range of Cantonese and Schezwan dishes. The interiors are not
forcefully Oriental, in fact, just a trendy blend of post-Art Deco and
a few Chinese masks with attenuated goatees. The recommended starters,
like crispy chilli babycorn begin at Rs 90 as do the soups, noodles and
the rice medley. And the jumbo prawns, which threaten to take over the
plate, are brought from Bengal and put together in a recipe fashioned
by Kokata's Chef Bharath. Make sure you're not spent before desert-the
flat noodles with honey and caramel are classic. Call (044) 811-0243.

Contemporary Crafts
The
Craft Workshop at Alliance Francaise involving four local craft outfits
hopes that craft adapts, modifies and reinvents itself-the only way it
can survive the machine-led devastation of modernism. So among the contenders,
Earth and Grass Workshop and Seed use natural building blocks such as
bamboo to structure CD racks, spice jars and other home accessories, while
Kassmi and Ishtaraak use a wood-bamboo-brass-wrought iron combo in furniture
and lamps (above). On till September 14. Call (011) 625-4293.

Resto-Bar
The
first impression is a screaming blue neon signboard outside that reads
'4S'. It's the newest "bar and restaurant" on the block
in GK-II's M-Block market. As you enter, there are more blue lights and
an aquarium with fat gold fish. But it's not a sea food place. 4S rustles
up only Punjabi cuisine-Murgh Tikkas, Tangdi Shan-e-Punjab, and the Seekh
Kebabs are must-haves. The bar counter serves speciality mocktails. Check
out 4S Smooch, a lime, ginger and cola concoction (Rs 60). Meal for two
costs Rs 400 (minus drinks). Call (011) 6453391 or 6213738.
