CAPLOOKS
To Levitate Over Fear
Bhopal: Some people bite their nails.
Uma Bharati ducks into the cockpit. Her fear of flying has forced her
to travel in the cockpits of domestic airliners on several occasions.
It has also aroused another fear in her coterie-the foreboding that they
will never make it to a foreign country. Now a sadhu in Bhopal, who does
not wish to be identified, is trying to address the problem and help the
minister rise above her phobia. Yoga is the method, and it will instil
confidence in her, the sadhu says. At the end of the exercise she will
be adept at keeping her nerves under control. That's something many will
be hoping for.
Seeking Adviser
Delhi:
Life has been a never-ending day for External Affairs and Defence Minister
Jaswant Singh since the terrorist attacks in the US. Feeling the need
for some help, he sought out his security adviser Arun Singh. The former
minister of state for defence was nowhere to be found. He had gone home
to Almora, and then set off on a trek. The entire Uttaranchal administration
was alerted. The story ended with Arun Singh returning to work.
No Go Doctor
Ahmedabad: After the terrorist attacks
in the US, everyone from Laloo Prasad Yadav to Yasser Arafat rushed in
to help. Laloo and Arafat both donated blood. Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai
Patel, with his great experience in handling calamities and relief operations,
could hardly sit back and do nothing. So the Gujarat Government decided
to despatch about 250 doctors to New York. The plan seemed perfect until
someone realised that none of these doctors would be allowed to practise
in the US without valid licences issued by the authorities there. End
of trip.
In Shining Armour
Mumbai:
The Samajwadi Party's rotund General Secretary Amar Singh was weighed
in silver ingots in Mumbai recently and, at 85 kg, surprised partymen
who had been told he weighed 83 kg. The sudden surge in his weight was
traced to the 2 kg silver sword he had been presented earlier on at the
function. Singh later donated all the silver ingots, worth Rs 6.5 lakh,
to charity but kept the sword. Guess that'll come in handy for the Uttar
Pradesh polls.
