SITE AND SOUND
Classical Music For The People

www.itcsra.com has a comprehensive archive

Many people are in awe of Indian classical music because they can't "understand it". But the rich store of Hindustani classical music at www.itcsra.com, launched by ITC's Sangeet Research Academy (SRA), may yet change their views. The gharana section offers access to archival treasures from 10 gharanas sung by the masters of the past century. The "Know your Raga" segment demonstrates ragas, their scales and a composition in each raga. To listen to the raga that is relevant to a particular time of the day, click on "Samay Raga". Create your own music room by tagging favourite pieces. The drawback of the site is that it offers only vocal music. That could be because SRA imparts training in only vocal music. Secondly, the faq section should be more detailed. Hopefully, the site will be updated regularly.
