COVER STORY: WAR ON TERRORISM

CROSSING THE BORDER: SHOULD INDIA STRIKE BACK?

V.P. SINGH FORMER PRIME MINISTER
"The US attack on training camps being run by the Taliban gives India the moral right to attack the training centres being run by Pakistan in PoK. But it should be done on the assessment of counter-response inside India and the risk of a wider conflict between the two countries."

SHARAD PAWAR FORMER DEFENCE MINISTER
"I think we should wait for the international action to continue and reach its logical conclusion. It is my considered view that this is no time to take any adventurous step. We should not be seen as exploiting the situation."

LALOO P. YADAV FORMER CHIEF MINISTER, BIHAR
"Everyone knows that terrorism in Kashmir has its roots in Pakistan. It's time India knocked down the terrorists camps. I know bombing the camps will amount to war but that becomes unavoidable when one sees things in the real perspective."

RAJNATH SINGH CHIEF MINISTER, UTTAR PRADESH
"All patriotic Indians would love to see the terrorist training camps in Pakistan demolished. And I am one of them. Pakistan should understand that we can deal firmly with terrorism. There is a limit to our patience; we will retaliate firmly and decisively."

K. NATWAR SINGH FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER
"Destroying camps can at best be a temporary measure. You destroy one set of camps, they will put up another lot. What needs to be done is to persuade the US to put pressure on Pakistan to stop aiding and abetting terrorists."

MULAYAM YADAV SAMAJWADI PARTY CHIEF
"This is not the time for such things. India already stands isolated in the world. We should not support the US blindly. We have failed on the diplomatic front and even Pakistan has humiliated us. So we must be very cautious and careful at this juncture."
\

J.N. DIXIT
FORMER FOREIGN SECRETARY
"If America can travel 10,000 km to take out terrorists and the Taliban Government, India at least can take action in the interests of its national security. Internationally, India is in a better position to take punitive action. And we should have the guts to face the consequences."

H.S. SURJEET
GENERAL SECRETARY, CPI(M)
"It's okay as long as we return fire like we did recently. But first strike will weaken our standing. We cannot attack the camps in Pakistan without creating global opinion against us. Anyway, I don't think the NDA Government will do anything against the wishes of the US."
