CONFESSIONAL

SHATRUGHAN SINHA

Filmstar and BJP MP on whether he plans to join the Congress

Q. Is your recent criticism of the BJP only to get another term in the Rajya Sabha?
A.
I am the No. 1 crowdpuller for the party. If after seven cabinet expansions I don't find a place, then it says more about how the party treats its loyal members than I can. A Rajya Sabha seat is
no big deal.

Q. So would you join the Congress?
A.
It is a party with history and great leaders. I have a lot of respect for it. I have good friends in the party like Kamal Nath. I am in no hurry to decide.

Q. You have never targeted Sonia's Italian origins.
A.
She is the widow of Rajiv Gandhi and daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi. What more could she have done to naturalise and accept India as her country? By rejecting her we are in fact rejecting our own past prime ministers. Even within the BJP I have always criticised the 'foreigner' issue.

Q. In your play Pati, Patni Aur Main you have not spared Atal Bihari Vajpayee or Pramod Mahajan but praised Vilasrao Deshmukh, Shiela Dikshit and Digvijay Singh of the Congress? Are BJP leaders not good enough?
A.
Well it is only a play and good natured sarcasm. I have the greatest respect for L.K. Advani. Arun Jaitley, Mahajan and Sushma Swaraj are good friends.
