War update: The Alliance Sweep

After capturing Mazar-e-Sharif earlier this week, the anti-Taliban forces met with no resistance in their takeover of Kabul

 

 

THE MANY BATTLES FOR KABUL
1979
Soviet troops march into Kabul following power struggle between communist leaders. Hafizullah Amin is executed.

1980
Backed by Soviet troops, Babrak Karmal is installed as ruler. But resistance by various mujahideen groups intensifies. US, Pakistan, China and Iran among others supply money and arms for the war.

1989
Soviet troops leave Afghanistan but civil war continues. Three years later, mujahideen close in on Kabul. Najibullah is ousted.

1993
Mujahideen factions agree on formation of a government with ethnic Tajik, Burhanuddin Rabbani, as president. Factional fights continue and Pashtoon- dominated Taliban emerge as a major challenger.

1996
The Taliban seize control of Kabul. After executing Najibullah in public, they impose harsh Islamic laws.

1999
UN imposes air embargo and financial sanctions to force Afghanistan to hand over Osama bin Laden.

2001
On September 11, hijacked airplanes crash into the World Trade Center twin towers in New York. Over 5,000 dead. Taliban refuse to hand over bin Laden and the US and Britain launch air strikes 26 days later.
