Lord Surya is a pratyaksh-visible-deity. Surya's light and power also manifest in the glory of the Hindu trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. It is believed that worshippers of Surya are free of the negative influences of the planets. The record label Dhadkan has brought out a new album, Surya Namaskar: Chants and Mantras of Surya. It contains hymns, the Gayatri Mantra, Surya Avahan, Surya Ashtakam and the Aditya Hridayam stotram. The mantras have been chanted by Ajay Phonkar, the well-known vocalist from the Kirana Gharana, and the music has been arranged by his son Abhijit. Each cassette costs Rs 75. Glittering Return

Fifty years after the Nizam's jewels were moved from Hyderabad to the vaults of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank in Mumbai, the treasure is finally back to where it belongs. Except that the display of the 173 exquisite pieces of jewellery will be on view only till January 27 at the Salar Jung Museum. On sale will be a range of souvenirs, including a replica of the Jacob diamond for Rs 400. Indians to pay an entry fee of Rs 50 and foreigners Rs 500.

Indian paintings rendered on small pieces of canvas and belonging to the period extending from the 14th to 19th century are called miniatures. Rajasthani, Mughal, Pahari and Deccani paintings were prominent among the miniatures. The Marito Corporation has launched a CD-ROM on Indian miniature paintings under the brand name Fotofine.
