Twelve
artists, of varying ability and stature, were asked by Delhi's blue chip
gallery, Art Today, to make their pictorial version of the zodiac signs.
Atul Dodiya's Capricorn was the best: the painting had leaves with pupils
and corneas, a bearded goat that was trying to eat them and a man with
a
displaced face like Picasso's Po trait of Dora Maar clutching on to an
overarching beetle on a wallpaper of yellow. Gulammohammed Sheikh's similarly
surreal version of Aquarius took on the world, mixing global geography
with hovering poltergeists and M.F. Husain, displaying his full fractured
form for his take on Virgo, had a woman in a diaphanous loin cloth and
matching stole ... the kind of stuff which he, anyway, needs no excuse
to do. A slick desk calender based on the experiment called Artoscope
2002 is also available at the Connaught Place gallery.
