UK SPECIAL: INDIA CALLING

MUSIC
Vintage Talent

By S. Sahaya Ranjit

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi turned 80 on February 4. The Unsung series-a collection of ragas and raga-bound compositions that he is reported to never have recorded before, and released by Times Music-celebrates Joshi's turning into an octogenarian. The ragas presented here-Ahir bhairav, Kaunsi Kanada, Puriya, Shudh Sarang and Marwa-are staple Joshi fare much sung, much heard, much loved. This series exemplifies him essentially as a khayaliya of Kirana tradition. However, Joshi has expanded the Kirana heritage hugely by incorporating aspects of other singing styles like bolbaant, boltan and intricate taan patterns. A collector's item for Joshi fans. Price: Rs 75 each.
