Of
all the classical dance forms that India boasts of, Kathak is the one
perceived to be most elegant. It evolved from the story-telling tradition
of the temples of north India. From the rustic cloth bag of the village
minstrel, it travelled through the royal courts of Hindu and Muslim rulers
and finally acquired the status of the foremost classical dance form of
India. Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj in his book, Ang Kavya, has
given names for every abstract hand movement and foot position. Birju
Maharaj has even codified various mudras. The main syllables corresponding
to the movements have also been mentioned. A must for Kathak dancers.
Published by Har-Anand, Ang Kavya is priced at Rs 250.
