UK SPECIAL: INDIA CALLING

ART
Gallery In Bloom

By S. Sahaya Ranjit

It's becoming increasingly fashionable in Delhi to open an exhibition space that alternates between being an art gallery and a fashion boutique. Vivant-"being alive" in Spanish-is one such gallery and in its latest show, buoyantly called "A Million Flowers Bloom", takes on a series of 28 established artists, both figural and abstract. Printmaker Anupam Sud is there as are colleagues Jatin Das, Gopi Gajwani (incidentally, his daughter-in-law runs the gallery), Dhiraj Chowdhury, Shamshad Husain, Subrata Kundu, Vinod Sharma and similar painters of the Modernist fellowship. Exhibition is on till April 29 at E-504 Greater Kailash II, Delhi. Call (011) 647 6854 or e-mail vivantindia@yahoo.com for more details.

EXHIBITION
Abstract Beauty

Chennai-based artist Alphonso Arul Doss presents "Forms, Colours and Movements" at the Lakshana Art Gallery, Bangalore. Doss has favoured light as his privileged artistic tool. His preoccupation with abstract concepts of faith, peace, terrorism, communal strife, political malpractices and corruption informs his iconography. From April 10 to 25 (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) For more information, call (080) 220 7946 or e-mail: lakshana@vsnl.com.

RESTAURANT
Parched Pleasures

The roadside version of the sugarcane juice is now a thing of the past. As temperature dips, restaurants and bars at the Radisson on National Highway No. 8, Delhi, will serve, along with the conventional plain juice, special sugarcane cocktails and mocktails. A hot afternoon, the plush environs of the restaurant and a glass of juice with crushed ice! Drop in or call (011) 677 9191.

BOOK
Bible of the Dancer

Attendance (Rupa & Co), edited by dance historian Ashish Mohan Khokar and released for the fourth consecutive year, focuses on the legendary Uday Shankar. The issue showcases choreography and examples of choreographic genius-Shankar, Astad Deboo, Chandralekha, Birju Maharaj, Daksha Sheth and others. It also provides a roundup of the dance scene in the UK, US and Germany. The interesting section is the viewpoint of dancers and critics. An excellent production. Each copy costs Rs 400. For ordering copies log on to www.attendance-india.com.
