And God Created Silk

And god created silkGod made the Earth in six days, says the Bible. These boys took thrice that time, and came up with just a sari. So what? Is God in the Guinness Book of Records? Brothers Vikash and Rajesh Chhajer are. Their 121 m long creation has been certified as the longest sari in the world. "The idea," says Rajesh, 23, "was to commemorate the 50th year of Independence." So they took some silk, dyed it in saffron, white and green, and sprinkled it with 127 hand-painted portraits of women -- from Mamta Kulkarni to Princess Di, Hillary Clinton to Mother Teresa. Too long for any of them to wear, of course.

Watch Out!

Manpreet, Bipasha and SheetalCindy Crawford, Pierce Brosnan, Martina Hingis and Manpreet Brar ... What do they have in common? Omega, says Brar gleefully. The former Miss India, now model, has bagged a prestigious two-year contract to be "brand ambassadress" for the watch company. In fact, Bipasha Basu, Sheetal Mallar and she are just back from Switzerland where they graced a celebrity golf tournament and shot for Omega's catalogue. What did it for Brar? "They were looking for someone in the glamour industry," says the mannequin with the mind, "and since it's a spokesperson's job, they want someone who can talk." And talk. And talk. And talk.

Hello!What's This?

AnaidaMehnazHow unprofessional can professional rivalries get? Anaida and Mehnaz -- singers, if you insist -- could tell you. Blank calls made to Anaida's house over the past month have been traced by the Bandra police to the Miss India miss' home. "We've had shows together. I did not expect this of her," fumes Anaida. But why not? Suresh Thomas of BMG-Crescendo, the company that promotes the two, puts it down to "the artistic temperament of the singers". Artist? Which one?

Tune in to the PM

"He's not just a neta, he's a kavi," says Padmaja Phenany Joglekar.Geet Gata Hoon Main So what's new? An album, dear friends. So smitten is Joglekar with Atal Bihari Vajpayee's verse that she and composer Mahesh Chandar have put the PM's poems to tune, for an album--Geet Naya Gata Hoon--being brought out by RPG Enterprises. Tell us, are Vajpayee's words in tune with his deeds? Well, says the 35-year-old Mumbai singer, microbiology graduate and Pandit Jasraj's shishya, "He may have his own political compulsions, but kavi Atalji is dearer to me. I am dealing with Atalji the poet, not the politician." Touchingly frank, isn't she?
