Jain Commission Fallout
Commision's Omissions

The initial revelation of the Jain Commission's interim report have, predictably, created a controversy. There are charges that Jain was selective in his indignation and that he did not attach sufficient importance to the testimonies of various individuals. In particular, the interim report has been criticised for prejudging the issue and partial use of available evidence. INDIA TODAY collates some of the contrarian testimonies. Excerpts:

Rajiv Gandhi"A hurried plan was made just two days prior to the fateful day by some persons in the Congress (whose names are not yet disclosed or known to the Jain Commission) and Rajiv Gandhi hurried to Sriperumbudur when even Maragatham Chandrasekhar did not know about the visit till the last moment or was not informed by the Congress about it ... The state security agency therefore did not get adequate time to make ... arrangements." (Affidavit of V.P.Singh)

"The role of Congress members who took Dhanu (to Rajiv's meeting) has not been scrutinised in my knowledge. So either the Congress people have not been scrutinised or have been absolved, as in the Indira Gandhi case when the Thakkar Commission gave a damaging report against R.K. Dhawan." (Deposition of V.P. Singh)

"The charge-sheet filed by the sit contains the statement of the accused which shows that Sivarasan and other ltte militants were trained at Dehradun by the Indian Army." (Affidavit of Tamil Nadu government)
