Jain Commission
Fallout The initial revelation of the Jain Commission's interim report have, predictably, created a controversy. There are charges that Jain was selective in his indignation and that he did not attach sufficient importance to the testimonies of various individuals. In particular, the interim report has been criticised for prejudging the issue and partial use of available evidence. INDIA TODAY collates some of the contrarian testimonies. Excerpts:
"The government finds it difficult to share the perception of the commission on the lapses attributed to the Central government and the IB. The SPG cover provided to Rajiv Gandhi as PM ceased to be available to him after he demitted office as per the provisions of the SPG Act, 1988, under which the SPG was then responsible for providing proximate security only to the PM and his immediate family members. The alternate security cover for Rajiv Gandhi was comprehensive and adequate to meet the perceived high level of threat ... and the assassination took place due to their faulty implementation on account of negligence on the part of the police personnel deployed at the said meeting." (Para 4 of the government's Action Taken Report over the J.S. Verma Commission of Inquiry, tabled in Parliament on December 23, 1992) |
