MUSIC
Kareeb
(Tips; rs 45)Lyrical, breezy,
with that ineffable quality of first love, this too is from the heart. Vidhu Vinod
Chopra's done it again: like 1942 A Love Story, it has the kind of music that gets under
your skin. Anu Malik's the complete composer and newcomer Sanjeevani's voice lends an
untarnished soulfulness to his efforts.
Seasons -- Shafqat Ali
(Plus: Rs 60)
A collection of thumris, dadras and kafis sung by Shafqat Ali
Khan -- some traditional and some composed by his father Ustad Salamat Ali Khan of the
Chorasi gharana. The compositions are based on ragas as varied as Gaudmalhar, Megh, Basant
and Multani kafi. Shafqat's voice has an ethereal appeal. His graceful ease at various
octaves makes him an artiste to watch out for.
Boondein -- Silk Route
(BMG Crescendo: Rs 65)
It's difficult to classify the songs of the album. They have
an influence of the Indian classical as well as folk music. All 10 songs are sung by Mohit
Chauhan who is ably accompanied by Kem Trivedi, with Atul Mittal providing instrumental
and vocal support. The lyrics are refreshingly original and neatly woven into the music.
Numbers like Dooba dooba and Boondein deserve special mention.
MOVIE
Jeans
(Directed By Shankar: Starring Prashanth, Aishwariya Rai, Lakshmi, Naazar,
Radhika)
The usual Indian masala film, peppered with picture-post card
song sequences. And ample helpings of computer graphics. All the same, Shankar fails to
hide the fact that what is served is masala and not much more. The music score by A.R.
Rahman adds another title to his list of mega hits.
