CONGRESS
OFFICIAL LINE: The foundations for the nuclear tests have been laid by successive Congress Prime Ministers.
GROUSE: But why now?
IMPLICATIONS: The party has to work at ways to regain the nationalist legacy.

UNITED FRONT
OFFICIAL LINE: The party does not seem to have one. Individual leaders like Gujral, Mulayam Singh Yadav have personal views.
GROUSE: We could have done it too.
IMPLICATIONS : Another blow for a tottering coalition.

LEFT
OFFICIAL LINE: The scientists must be congratulated for their nuclear "research".
GROUSE: Does India need N-bombs against friendly China ?
IMPLICATIONS : The Left concedes the national security plank to the BJP and allies.
