INDIA TODAY-ORG MARG POLL
Solid SupportWell done, says a large majority of Vajpayee's
fellow Indians.
In the wake of the series of nuclear
tests, India Today commissioned ORG-MARG to conduct an opinion poll to assess whether
people approved of the explosions, what they thought would be the fallout and whether we
should go ahead with a programme of weaponising the country's nuclear capabilities.
Researchers fanned out to 12 cities -- Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore,
Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Patna, Bhopal and Cuttack -- and interviewed 1,635
people in the 18-plus age group on May 13. An overwhelming majority -- 87 per cent --
cutting across political affiliations approved of India carrying out these tests. This
trend was consistent across gender, age groups (18 to 34 and 35+) and levels of education
(below graduate and graduate and above). A sizeable number of the respondents (86 per
cent) were of the view that India should develop nuclear armaments. And almost two-thirds
of the people (64 per cent) felt the tests were not designed solely to get mileage for the
BJP.
