MOVIES
Achanak

(Directed by Naresh Malhotra; Starring Govinda, Manisha Koirala, Paresh Rawal)

That the director of Yeh Dillagi can concoct this brainless whodunit is strange. Going after Govinda's fortune, Rawal decimates his family and puts his girl Manisha in jail. The suspense is tedious, acting mechanical. Only poor Govinda, who even attempts a Jim Carrey in a Mask take-off, seems convinced about the plot. A tacky project.

MUSIC
Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha

(Baba Music; Rs 40)

A variety of melodies and Voices make this album worth a hear. Each song is unique in its own way -- be it the beat or mood. The Jatin-Lalit pair have managed to keep their listeners spellbound. Singers include Asha Bhosle, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Vinod Rathod and Abhijeet. Pyaar to hona hi tha -- the title track by Remo Fernandes and Jaspinder Narula is especially good.

Samunder -- Ghazals by Ghulam Ali
(Ultra Series; Rs 40)

Sensitive and touching tunes transcend all barriers to transport the listener to divergent worlds of happiness, sorrow and joy. Ghulam Ali enthrals with his soothing voice. The most notable ghazals in the collection include Bekrar tanhaiyon ka silsila and Yeh kaun aa gayee dilruba. Amjad Parvez provides fairly good vocal support. The music by Naseer Ahmed Nasir is quite enriching.

Lagna Mangal -- Ashit and Hema Desai
(Navras; Rs 65)

It may not be the traditional wedding season in Gujarat and Rajasthan right now but this cassette is ideal for such an occasion. There are songs for almost every part of the ceremony. Suraj ugyao re announces the arrival of the groom while Dheere re cheedo is sung during the bride's tearful vidaai. This husband-wife duo have just the right kind of voices to capture the marriage fervour.
