MUSIC 50 Glorious Years of Punjabi Music This collection boasts of artistes from both India and across the border, and numbers such as Kala shah kala, Mera laung gawacha and Tutak tutak tutian that will appeal not just to Punjabis, but even to people outside the state. A collector's item. Kashmir, A Rainbow of Melodies-Bhajan Sopori Inspired by the return of peace to his native Kashmir, Bhajan Sopori has composed seven pieces for the santoor -- a musical instrument of the state -- corresponding to the colours of the rainbow. "It is a product of my memories of Kashmir that have inspired me from time to time," says the artiste. ART Six Modern Masters of India "Masters"? That too "modern masters"? Well, few lovers of art will question the title of the exhibition, considering that the works on display are by some of the most popular names in modern Indian art: Maqbool Fida Husain, Satish Gujral, Francis Newton Souza, Krishen Khanna, Ram Kumar and Tyeb Mehta. Husain's horses, Gujral's human forms, Souza's erotica, they're all there. Calli-Graphic Paintings-Riten Mozumdar Mozumdar lends a rhythm to the scripts he uses, giving a whole new meaning to the word calligraphy. The choice of medium -- dyes on silk -- imbues the paintings with a certain glow. These works were done by the artist in Santiniketan, where he now leads a rather reclusive life. A reticence and serenity are evident. |
